SUMMARY:Siegen Forest Bluebell Walks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through the Virginia Bluebells and other spring ephemerals on Saturday April 4\, 11\, and 18 at 10am with Virginia Master Naturalist John Bryan. Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are native wildflowers that are ephemeral. They emerge in early spring and after blooming\, disappear without a trace until the following spring. Bluebells spread through rhizomes and self seeding\, and prefer moist shady habitats like forested floodplains along rivers and streams. They first emerge as purple foliage which turns to bright green as purple buds unfurl into the unmistakable blue flowers that carpet the forest for several weeks. \nWe will be searching for other signs of spring along the way\, covering approximately 3 miles. Meet at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center. Our walk along the Rapidan River is followed by a moderate climb to a rock outcropping that provides an excellent view of the Rapidan River and surrounding forest. From there\, participants will retrace their steps along the river. \nThese walks are free but registration is required as space is limited.

DESCRIPTION:Run the Great Train Race!\nThe Great Train Race has been a tradition in Fredericksburg Virginia for over 30 years! The event is one of the largest timed kid’s races on the east coast. Young runners get the rare opportunity to compete in a race just for them.  \nThe race starts near the Fredericksburg Train Station and runs through historic downtown. Runners cross the Crown Trophy Finish Line at the City Docks. Runners and families are invited to the Race Festival located in the commuter lot behind the Train Station for awards\, music\, vendors\, and treats. \nThe race consists of 3 events for kids under 18:  \nThe 1-mile Express for ages 6 to 17\nThe 1/2-mile George Dashington for ages 10 and under\nThe 1/4-mile Caboose Run for ages 5 and under\nThe Express and George Dashington will be chip timed races. The Caboose Run is a fun run and will not be timed. \nAll runners receive a finishers medal and race shirt (shirts are only guaranteed when registered before April 1st).

DESCRIPTION:Families and individuals with special needs are invited to visit Ferry Farm\, George Washington’s Boyhood Home\, for a sensory-friendly experience. Join us from 10 am to 12 pm on Sunday\, May 17—when we will be closed to the general public—to explore the replica Washington House; walk along the Rappahannock River; and learn about the lives of George\, his mother Mary\, other Washington family members\, and the enslaved community who lived here in the eighteenth century. \nTwenty-minute guided tours of the Washington House will be offered at 10:10 am\, 10:20 am\, and 10:30 am. From 11 am to 12 pm\, the House will be open for self-paced walkthrough tours\, with historic interpreters available to answer questions. Pre-registration is required for guided and walkthrough tours. The guided tours will be capped at 15 tours. Forty-five walkthrough tour tickets will be available. \nTouch and smell boxes will be available in the visitor center\, which also features the introductory exhibit The Science of History at Ferry Farm\, showcasing colonial and Civil War artifacts excavated at Ferry Farm. Visitors can peek into the Archaeology Lab\, home to some of the thousands of artifacts found at Ferry Farm. \nNeed to take a break?
